About CloudSound

Access to quality and affordable healthcare is a global problem, with women in developing countries being the most affected.

According to research published in 2018, 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries. In South Africa, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) is at approximately 119 per 100 000 live births, compared to 11 for high-income countries.

Lack of access to healthcare prevents pregnant women from receiving the skilled care they need. Often, patients have to travel vast distances and spend hours in long queues, only to be told to come back another day, which means another day without pay for most. Consequently, it is estimated that most women in sub-Saharan Africa go through their pregnancy without a single ultrasound scan.

During the 20-week scan, high-risk pregnancies and birth defects can be identified, which allows for appropriate triage, supportive care during pregnancy, and planning for delivery. Therefore, by removing the lack of access barrier, we can significantly reduce the risk of maternal and infant/foetal deaths in Africa.

CloudSound addresses this issue using a multi-pronged approach that combines modern hardware, cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence to bring ultrasound scans and expert diagnoses to rural areas. In addition, our solution provides up to date information on patients and pregnancies to local Public Healthcare authorities, allowing them time to make better decisions and plan for complicated births.

CEO and Co-founder

Daniek is an experienced Machine Learning engineer with a passion for Computer Vision. She has a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and she has guided numerous data science teams towards success.

George Farmer


Director and Co-founder

George, the founder, was a founder and an executive director of Praelexis (Pty) Ltd, the first black-owned and managed artificial intelligence company in South Africa. He was also part of the negotiation team that sold 33% of the equity in Praelexis (Pty) Ltd to Capitec Bank Ltd.

Ruan van der Merwe


Director and Co-founder

Ruan is a practising attorney and notary public who has served on the boards of various companies operating in the property and private equity investment industries. His experience includes being the chief legal officer at an artificial intelligence company.
